STITCH

The Smart Ginger Housemate

3 years old, neutered, male

Available

For adoption anywhere in the UK

Stitch first appeared in a colony as something of a quiet, self-appointed guardian. A striking ginger-and-white boy with a rather serious expression, he mostly kept to himself and didn’t show much interest in the other cats around him. Stitch was very much the independent type — content to observe the world from a slight distance and mind his own business.

That was, until two tiny dumped kittens appeared in the colony.

For reasons known only to him, Stitch decided these small newcomers were now his responsibility. The once-loner transformed into something resembling a strict but devoted father figure. He kept a watchful eye on them, showed them the ropes of colony life and tolerated their youthful chaos with the quiet patience of someone who had clearly decided this was now his job.

Eventually, all three were rescued together. Once safely indoors, however, it became clear that Stitch had completed his fatherly duties and was quite ready to return to a life that suited him better — one where he could focus on his people rather than supervising small kittens.

After moving to a new foster home, Stitch settled in quickly and gradually revealed his true personality. He is an independent cat with a strong sense of character, but also one who enjoys companionship on his own terms. Even now, his foster says that Stitch is still revealing new sides of his personality — and with each passing day he becomes noticeably more affectionate.

Stitch is a remarkably clever and emotionally perceptive cat. His foster often jokes that he seems to read people’s emotions simply from a look. If he climbs onto the table — which he knows he shouldn’t — it is often enough just to glance at him for Stitch to immediately hop back down to the floor, as if he fully understands the rules of the house.

He is also thoughtful in the way he shares space with his humans. If his foster is busy, Stitch doesn’t demand attention or interrupt. Instead, he quietly waits until the right moment to come over for affection — a small detail that says a great deal about his awareness and gentle nature.

Stitch is the sort of cat who chooses his moments. When he wants affection, he will come over quite confidently for it. When his people return home, he greets them warmly and follows them around the house to see what they’ve been up to. Once the day settles down, he’s equally happy to join the family for some quiet company — perhaps watching television nearby or claiming a comfortable spot on the bed.

Playtime is also part of his routine, particularly with his favourite cat tunnel and toys, which bring out a surprisingly playful side to this otherwise dignified gentleman. Despite his serious expression, Stitch is quite the entertainer — a long-legged, slightly lanky boy who can be wonderfully funny and full of energy when he gets into the spirit of a game.

Stitch is also a sociable fellow who greets visitors with curiosity rather than disappearing under furniture. Guests are usually met with calm interest — clearly, Stitch considers it part of his role to see who has come to visit.

Stitch currently lives with an eight-year-old boy, and their relationship has developed into a rather lovely partnership. At first, they both had to test and learn each other’s boundaries — Stitch making it clear he appreciates a little personal space, and the boy learning to read the subtle signals cats use to communicate. Now that an understanding has been reached, Stitch has become noticeably more affectionate and tolerant, even allowing the occasional enthusiastic hug.

He is also a respectful cat who clearly understands the “house rules” of his foster mum, responding well to guidance and settling comfortably into family life.

Stitch would thrive in a home that appreciates the charm of an adult cat with personality — a companion who enjoys affection, play and company, but also values a little independence. A family with children aged around eight and above, who understand that cats have their own boundaries, would suit him well.

What Stitch offers is the best of both worlds:

a confident, independent cat who yet will happily play, greet you at the door, keep you company in the evenings — and occasionally remind you that even serious-looking ginger gentlemen have a very soft side indeed.
