Where Do Adoption Fees Go? The Reality Behind Rescue Costs

One of the most common questions we’re asked is: “Why is there an adoption fee?”
It’s a fair question - and an important one.
But what many people don’t realise is that adoption fees don’t generate profit. They don’t even come close to covering the true cost of rescuing and rehoming a cat.
At Itty Bitty Kitty Tails (IBKT), we operate as a small, volunteer-run non-profit. Every fee goes straight back into the rescue - and even then, it only covers part of the journey.
What the Adoption Fee Covers
Before any cat is ready for adoption, they go through a full process to ensure they are healthy, stable, and properly prepared for a home environment.
Each cat receives:
full veterinary checks
blood tests (including FIV and FeLV)
vaccinations
sterilisation
microchipping
treatment for any injuries or illness
required health and travel documentation
This is the baseline standard we commit to for every single cat.
The Reality Behind the Costs
What the adoption fee doesn’t show are the costs behind the scenes.
Many of the cats we take in need far more than basic care. We regularly deal with:
injuries from traffic or accidents
untreated infections
malnutrition and dehydration
ongoing or complex medical conditions
Some cases are straightforward. Others are not.
And that’s before we factor in:
flights to the UK
foster care support (food, litter, essentials)
follow-up veterinary treatment
The reality is that rescue is unpredictable - and costs vary significantly from one cat to the next.
Why the Adoption Fee Is Only a Contribution
The adoption fee is not a reflection of the true cost.
It is simply a contribution.
IBKT is not a business, and we do not operate for profit. There is no margin built into what we do.
A significant portion of the costs are covered directly, alongside support from a small network of people who help where they can.
We keep adoption fees as fair and accessible as possible because the priority is not to recover costs - it’s to find the right home for each cat.
Why Transparency Matters
We believe in keeping things clear and straightforward:
there is no payment until you receive your cat
every cat is fully prepared before travel
support doesn’t stop after adoption
This isn’t just about rehoming - it’s about doing it properly.
How Your Adoption Helps (Beyond One Cat)
When you adopt, your fee contributes to more than just that one animal.
It helps us:
move forward with the next rescue
cover immediate medical needs
continue operating as a non-profit without external funding
Every adoption creates space - both physically and financially - for the next cat in need.
Where Donations Make the Difference
This is the part that often goes unseen.
Without additional support, rescue work simply doesn’t sustain.
Donations allow us to:
step in on urgent cases
take on cats that require more complex treatment
continue care without delay
maintain a consistent standard of welfare
As a small, volunteer-run non-profit, we don’t have the luxury of predictable funding.
There are no regular direct debits or guaranteed monthly income supporting the work behind the scenes.
Everything we do is funded in real time - case by case, cat by cat.
That means consistent, ongoing support makes a real difference. It gives us the ability to plan, to respond, and most importantly, to keep going.
Because in rescue, timing matters - and without support, there are times where we simply can’t step in.
This Only Works With Support
Rescue is not self-sustaining.
It relies on a combination of:
adopters
fosters
and people willing to support financially
The adoption fee is one part of that system - but it doesn’t carry it on its own.
Be Part of the Process
If you’re adopting, you’re already making a difference.
If you’re in a position to support further - whether through donations or ongoing contributions - you’re helping ensure this work can continue in a way that is responsible, consistent, and sustainable.
