Rescuing a cat is just the first step in their journey to a new life. At Itty Bitty Kitty Tails, we don’t just find abandoned cats and place them in homes - we take the time to heal, rehabilitate, and carefully match each cat with the right adopter. Our goal is to ensure every cat gets the best possible second chance, and that adopters welcome a healthy, well-adjusted companion into their home.
So, what happens from the moment a cat is rescued to the day they arrive in their forever home? Let’s walk through the rescue-to-rehoming journey.
Step 1: Rescue & Immediate Veterinary Care
Many of the cats we rescue have been through horrific experiences. Some have been abandoned, hit by cars, or even abused - it’s not uncommon to find cats with broken bones, severe infections, or other life-threatening injuries.
As soon as a cat is rescued, they are taken to a highly reputable vet clinic, where they receive a comprehensive medical check-up. These clinics are staffed by UK- and European-qualified vets, ensuring the highest standard of care. The cats undergo:
Full health assessment – Eyes, ears, teeth, and coat condition are thoroughly checked.
Comprehensive blood work – Screening for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus), as well as liver and kidney function tests.
Treatment for injuries or illnesses – Many rescued cats require extensive medical care, from wound treatment to surgeries for broken bones. Some medical bills can reach thousands of pounds, but we never give up on a cat that has a chance to recover.
Sterilisation, vaccination & microchipping – All our cats are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped before they are placed for adoption.
Step 2: Rehabilitation & Foster Care
We firmly believe that cats should never be kept in cages. Instead, every rescued cat is placed into a loving foster home, where they can heal and adjust in a comfortable, home-like environment.
Fostering is one of the most crucial parts of the rescue process. Cats spend a minimum of 3–4 months in foster care before being considered for adoption. During this time, we:
Closely monitor their health and recovery – Any lingering medical issues are treated before rehoming.
Assess their behaviour and personality – We take the time to truly understand each cat's quirks, preferences, and temperament.
Ensure they are well-socialised – Whether a cat prefers a quiet home or is playful and social, this period helps us match them with the right family.
Because of our home-from-home approach, every adoption is carefully considered - not just for the cat’s sake, but also for the adopter. We don’t believe in rushed or unsuitable adoptions, and we would rather wait until we find the perfect match.
Step 3: Finding the Perfect Home
Unlike many shelters, we do not list newly rescued cats for adoption immediately. Every cat must complete their foster period first, allowing us to truly understand their needs.
Once they are ready for adoption, we:
Match them with a suitable family – Based on the cat’s personality, needs, and preferences.
Do not rehome kittens under 6 months old – We believe kittens need enough time to develop and socialise before being placed in a new home.
Ensure a lifelong commitment – We are always available for advice and support, even after adoption.
Step 4: The Journey to Their Forever Home
Once a match is confirmed, we arrange the cat’s journey to the UK.
Because rescue and rehoming involves a transfer of ownership, the process follows the relevant UK import and health requirements. We manage this carefully with our logistics partners to ensure everything is done properly and responsibly.
Adopters only pay the adoption fee once the cat has safely arrived.
Why This Process Matters
Rehoming a cat isn’t just about finding them a home - it’s about finding them the right home. Because of our careful rehabilitation process, our adopters welcome:
A cat that has been fully health-checked and socialised
A pet whose personality is well understood and suited to their household
A stress-free adoption process with full transparency
Every cat that finds a loving home frees up space for another rescue in need, allowing us to continue our mission of saving lives.
